I learned of this book accidently, while listening to a sermon from the late Dr. Martyn Lloyd Jones. I had never heard of this man, but when I investigated him and his ministry, this book stood out as something special. He was a contemporary of Charles Haddon Spurgeon and spoke at his church. The book dates back to 1841.The primary focus is on the sovereignty of God in salvation, however, as yet imperfect, we as true believers are still susceptible to the weakness of the flesh. It takes a realistic look at ways a Christian may temporarily slip into a state of "declension", or a turning away from God and things holy, and provides practical help in spiritual ascent in the power of the Holy Spirit. I would recommend this book for any Christian, whether a new believer or a mature one. It is a real treasure and a blessing.Product details

This is a tremendous book for any and every Christian, whether you think you're backslidden or not. It contains gems and nuggets of sheer comfort and exposition of the love of Jesus Christ for His people on every page. I've read tons of Christian literature and have never found anything quite like this. If I were trapped on a desert island, the Bible and "Personal Declension" by Octavius Winslow would be the first two books I would want with me. If you're so inclined, buy it and read it. You will be blessed!
This classic dramatically improved my understanding of sanctification. PDRRS is a jewel of spiritual comfort. While the title is long, the message is simple there are specific, correctable reasons for why we are experiencing "ups and downs" in our devotion to Christ. Winslow is a doctor well trained to diagnose and prescribe scriptural treatments. Though sometimes hard to swallow, these truth are coated in the pastor's knowledgeable tenderness and are therefore received more sweetly. Highly recommended.
I was really backsliding and the Lord used this book in such a magnificent way to bring me back to Himself. In a deeply searching manner, Winslow points out the causes for backsliding and the remedies in Christ. Many paragraphs are so piercing that you just have to stop and pray over them and ask for God to search your heart. Anyone who senses that they are growing lukewarm in their walk with the Lord should seriously read through this book and I know God will bless them enormously! I'm also reading Life in Jesus by the same author (a biography on his mother Mary Winslow) and it is wonderful!
This is a precious precious book. He has such a grasp of the workings of our relationship with God in Christ, the work of grace in the heart, and an amazing way of talking about it all. He talks about how the "divine graces" in the heart and life droop and decay, symptoms, marks, reasons and ways of recovery, all biblical, gospel centered, Christ exalting. Topics include; Declension in Prayer, Declension in Love, Declension in connection with Doctrinal error, On Grieving the Holy Spirit and finally, "The Lord the restorer of his people", and "The Lord the keeper of his people."
It was written after his book, "On the Holy Spirit" another gem. With such a pastoral heart. I will be returning to this book over the years. God bless you in the reading of it.
